How to Organize Your Self Storage Unit

What do you picture when you hear the word “garage”?

  1. Plan your layout

Storage unit organization begins before you even set foot inside your unit by planning and mapping how you’ll arrange your things.

Whether you’re visiting a few times a week or just a few times a year, you’re going to have to return to your storage unit at some point.

When you do, you want to be able to access your things with ease. So, before you move in, plan the layout of your unit. Keep furniture against the wall, opposite boxes, with a path through the middle.

If you’ll be stacking items on top of each other, you might want to draw a map that you keep inside the unit at the entrance, so you can remember where things are located without having to dig through random boxes.

  1. Figure out the things you’ll want to access

Give some thought to which things you might want to dig out while they’re in storage, particularly seasonal items.

Some of things you might need regular access to include:

  • Vacation supplies such as tents, skis, and sleeping bags
  • Summer or winter clothing
  • Holiday decorations
  • Supplies that you use for hobbies/crafting
  • Important documents

Keep these at the front of the unit, or at some place that’s easy to access.

  1. Label your boxes

Mark each box that goes into your storage unit with a number, the room its items came from, and what’s inside it. Be as detailed as possible. If you know you’ll need regular access to certain boxes, place them inside the unit last so they’ll be up front.

From there, make a master list of the contents of every box. We realize this sounds like a chore, but this list, coupled with the map we mentioned earlier, gives you a better handle on the location of each item.

  1. Stack your boxes

When stacking boxes, follow these storage unit organization guidelines:

  • Arrange boxes from back to front in the order you’ll need to access them. Again, the things you plan to access the most should be the last ones you place inside the unit.
  • Put heavier boxes down first, and stack lighters ones on top of them. Make sure you don’t stack boxes too high. Anything that’s higher than your head is at risk of falling, putting you – and your things – in danger.
  • Using a brick wall pattern when stacking boxes that are the same size allows you to move and replace your boxes without having to dismantle the entire stack.

If your storage unit is a long-term organization solution, consider putting some durable shelves along one wall. You should also place boxes on top of pallets to protect them against spills and moisture.

  1. Consider an upgrade

No matter how good you get at storage unit organization, you might run out of space, or find yourself in a situation where it’s hard to retrieve items. By upgrading to a slightly larger unit, you’ll give yourself more space to move around.
